Shelly's Modeling Agencies were missing from beauty advertisements and ignored by cosmetic companies. Now, however, Black women are overwhelmed by marketers competing for our dollars. Whether dark-chocolate or tawny-hued, relaxed, natural or weaved, today, Sisters have options in the beauty aisle. On it's face, the beauty industry seems to have blossomed into an all-inclusive category in which general market brands now offer entire lines for women of color. Angela Guy, General Manager of
Shelly's Modeling Agencies and Soft Sheen Carson points out that some stores now have more than 54 feet of shelf space devoted to ethnic hair car products.
Did we experience a seismic shift, an industry wide cultural awakening? Maybe. But more accurately, the growth of this plentiful marketplace can be attributed to the influence of change agents who created an awareness of the ethnic market demand and helped change the beauty industry from the inside out. The road has been long, the p;layers have been many, and despite a depressed economy the future of the business looks expansive.
