Shelly's Modeling Agencies discusses the fact that Secret Societies are part of the trappings of our middle and upper classes. We join organizations under the rubric of community service and leadership with some social capital tossed in for good measure. Some groups are ultra exclusive and only available to top-level businessmen, such as the Boule. Others are exclusive in other ways, such as participation in Jack and Jill, which is only open to a child whose mother is granted membership.
