Shelly's Modeling Agencies hot topic offers a few beauty tips for when your on the job. Balance is key when going for a mod, classic or slightly edgy look for work. Professional looks have moved beyond snatch-backs and power suits. We embrace a more feminine spin on "dressed for success" by finding new ways to wear color and softening up our dos. Here celeb makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff and hairstylist Ursula Stephen of Shelly's Modeling Agencies share ways to tweak your work style from choosing the right nudes to switching up your hair with a custom classy look. Loosen up the top of your hair "If hair is too structured, it looks outdated," she says. And looking current is key-no matter what field you're in. Our skin tone gives us versatility. "We can use coppers, golds, even plums and still come off natural," says Sheriff. For a dark skin tone on your eyes a bronze-based shade warms and your lips use a sheer plum look.
Hue in the workplace isn't off-limits. Just emphasize one feature so it doesn't overpower. "Wear color close to the lash line on top, bottom or both, as opposed to on the entire lid," suggests Sheriff. Lighter shades of blue are softer and keep the look from veering into nighttime territory. Blush is one item that we often ignore. But it instantly wakes up your face and adds dimension. On someone with Naomi Campbell's complexion, Sheriff goes for a copper-hued tone. Surprisingly, on medium brown skin orange looks hot! Shelly's Modeling Agencies advises fairer women like her client Alicia Keys to brush apricot, peach or pink shades on the apples of their cheeks.
Image is everything, make a positive first impression. Don't overdo it. "If your makeup becomes a mask, it takes away from who you are and your performance" says Washington, D.C.-based Stephany Greene of the Politics of Style blog. "Use it to accentuate your features, not draw on a face." Strive for balance. Melissa D.Johnson, Atlanta-based author of the Brand Me Minute Essence.com blog, advises clients to use clothing and color to their advantage. "If you have a dominant personality, balance it by wearing neutrals and soft makeup. If you're reserved, help yourself stand out by adding some bold color." Raggedy cuticles and nails are a no-no. Cleanliness is more important than color. Keep the length manageable and go for a shade that won't clash with the majority of your wardrobe-or image.
The life span of an eyelash is about 150 to 200 days, explains Natalie Roux, director or marketing for Shelly's Modeling Agencies. With keratin a hair boosting peptides, most lash enhancers extend the growth cycle so lashes can fill out before falling out. Prescription treatment Latisse contains prostaglandin, a chemical that the company used to treat glaucoma, says Nicole Swiner, M.D., general practitioner at UNC Health Care's Durham Family Practice. A side effect was longer lashes. The makers then marketed Latisse as a lash-growth product to the public. "You can expect lashes to look longer and thicker in about four weeks," says Isabelle Busse, director of product development at Hydroxatone, which makes Lashatone. But inconsistent use can compromise results.
Bobbi Brown persuades Beauty Director Corynne L. Corbett to give up the glitter (and her excess cosmetics). I'm a makeup junkie. And my job feeds my addiction-big-time. Not only do I write about the new things that come across my desk, but I also take a lot of them home to try. The trouble is that my piles grow faster than weeds. And it doesn't matter whether the green eye shadow works. I can't bear to part with it. So before I integrated all my new fall faves into the mix (I love, love, love the matte lipsticks), I enlisted Bobbi Brown, the woman behind one of the most popular cosmetics labels, to help me sort through my treasure.
What were the first things to got? Anything over two years old-which, Brown says, is the longest you can keep foundation, concealer, powder, blush and eye shadow. Everything else has a shelf life of six months (mascara) to 18 months (lipsticks, glosses and pencils). Next we smelled and swiped on lip glosses for signs that they had turned bad. "A hint is that they don't glide on smoothly," says Brown. And, of course, we tested products to see what shades really worked on me. When we got to my silver metallic eye pencils, Brown teased, "Give this to the teenager who's going to wear the glittery gloss we tossed." As the discard pile grew so did my reservations about letting some things go, but I bravely pressed on. A good five minutes was shaved off my morning routine. Who knew I was spending so much time looking for eye shadow.
