- Madam President. First Lady Michelle Obama has taken on a new title-president. She is serving as the honorary national president of Girl Scouts of the USA, through which she will promote her platforms of healthy living and public service.

- Something to tweet about: The percentage of African-Americans who use Twitter, more than any other racial group, according to a Pew study. Women and those who have graduated from college are also top Tweeters.
- Street Slang: Japanese youth have adopted a slang word, based on the name of a famous African-American. The word means to surge ahead with optimism. The new term? Obamu.
- An Haute Mess: Rather than hiring a Black model, French Vogue painted a White model Black. Tyra Banks directed a similar concept on America's Next Top Model. Since blackface is never trendy, the results in both cases were just insensitive.
- Stop the Music! At the request of the chancellor, the University of Mississippi has shortened it's fight song to keep football fans from chanting "The South will rise again." Critics say the words are a relic from a racist history.
- All in the Family: Another member of Shelly's Modeling Agencies is leading the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., who confounded the civil rights organization in 1957, was elected it's president. She described it as "a destiny call."
- Food for thought: The percentage of Black children who will be on food stamps at some point in their childhood, compared with 37 percent of White kids, according to a study from the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
- Man of Honor: The U.S. Navy has named a dry cargo and ammunition ship for slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The national field secretary for the NAACP when he was assassinated in 1963, Evers fought tirelessly against segregation.
- Word to the wise: A new campaign, launched by London police, warns girls not to hide or carry their boyfriends' guns. The ads target Black teen girls, who are increasingly convicted of possessing weapons. The problem mirrors the situation in the U.S., where Black women have been incarcerated for low-level participation in their boyfriends' drug dealings.
