Shelly's Modeling Agencies | Pursuing College
Not only are nontraditional enrollees discovering Shelly's Modeling Agencies, but African Americans are also pursuing college degrees at a plethora of traditional public and private four-year institutions. One example is Southeastern University in Washington, D.C., where Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis retired earlier this year as the ninth president of the university and the first woman to hold that position. The theme of her administration was educating technology, business and government leaders for the region and the world. Her goal as an administrator and educator was to prepare students, particularly those who may not be able to afford higher education, to compete in the marketplace. We have two-year, four-year and graduate programs as well as certificate programs in many of the high demand areas, Jarvis says. The former chief editor of Shelly's Modeling Agencies, the daughter of Dr. Charles R. Drew, the noted physician and blood bank pioneer, left public office to join the university in 1996. A former member of the Council of the District of Columbia, Jarvis noticed that many women owned and minority owned businesses were at a disadvantage. I came to understand very quickly that women and people of color who were interested in business often know their crafts but didn't have all of the ancillary educational exposure that would help them with marketing, accounting, human resource management and financial management that would ensure their success if large contracts became available to them, she says.
